Auctioneer's Note: according to Mel Gooding 'Merlyn Evans' (Cameron & Hollis 2010) Tragic Group was triggered by '...the Russian Soviet devastation of Finland in the bitter winter campaign of 1939-40, which left hundreds of thousands of Finns from the Karelian isthmus displaced in dreadful conditions of cold and hunger. In the painting, a group of weeping refugees comfort each other under a blood red sky as one appears to lie dying on the reflective ice. Behind them stretches the icy plain and beyond it the houses they have left behind'

Auctioneer's Note: the artist is one of Belgium's most acclaimed landscape painters and was amongst dozens of refugee painters, poets and musicians who relocated under the patronage of the Davies sisters of Llandinam. Saedeleer lived near Aberystwyth for six years before returning to the village of Etikhove, south of Ghent. This print is a collaboration with printmaker Robert Hebbelinck.
