Auctioneer's Note: born Berlin in 1919 to Jewish parents, Koppel moved to Prague with his family after the Nazi takeover, where he began his training as an artist. In 1938, he fled to Britain with his father, stepmother, and siblings, but his mother Paula, who suffered from debilitating arthritis, was unable to make the journey. Tragically, she was left behind in Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia and sent to her death at the Treblinka concentration camp in Poland.
Koppel’s father, Joachim, established a zip manufacturing company at Treforest Trading Estate, which was requisitioned to produce aircraft components during WWII. After settling in London, Koppel studied under fellow émigré artist Martin Bloch. In 1944, he moved to Dowlais, near Merthyr Tydfil, where he taught art and focused on his painting. His reputation as an artist grew, and he exhibited at the Modern Art Gallery in London alongside other European refugees.
He was a founding member of the 56 Group, whose primary aim is the exhibition and promotion of contemporary Welsh art and artists. In his later years, Koppel moved to Cwmerfyn near Aberystwyth, where he continued to paint until his death at the age of 61 in 1980
