Auctioneer's Note: from the early 1980s Flynn was recognised first nationally and then globally as a ceramic modeller of the highest order. By 1990 he was in museum collections across Britain, Europe, Asia, and the Americas, from the V&A in London, and the National Museum of Wales, to the Museum of Arts and Design in New York and the Gyeonggi Ceramic Museum in South Korea. His idioms were the human figure and animals, alone and in groups, invariably in motion, walking, running, dancing, making love. Flynn’s ability to capture movement in living creatures was rare, and this on its own placed him at the forefront of the contemporary sculpture and ceramic scenes. Flynn was born in Wuppertal, Germany, one of three sons of Irish parents. When Michael was in his teens, the family left Germany, and Michael spent some time living on a farm in Ireland, then at 16 went to Birmingham School of Art to study fine art. He trained as a teacher at Worcester College of Education, then taught in schools for a few years. In 1975 he started studies in ceramics at Cardiff School of Art, and his work attracted attention even before he finished his degree. He subsequently took a master’s in Fine Art, and spent the rest of his life and career based in the city. He held teaching posts at Cardiff School of Art, Camberwell College of Art (now part of the University of the Arts, London), the Royal College of Art, Columbia University in New York and NSCAD University in Canada. Solo exhibitions included two at CAA in London (Ceramic Focus, 1999, and Forest, 2009), Michael Flynn at the V&A (2001-02) and Transition and Resonance (Llantarnam Grange Arts Centre, 2013, and Aberystwyth Art Centre, Wales, 2014).

Auctioneer's notes: after the circa 1516-17 original now in the collection of the Museo Nazionale di Capodimonte, Naples. This composition shows the Rest on the Flight into Egypt, although (as also seen in works around the same time by Dosso Dossi) it omits the figure of Saint Joseph. The traditional title refers to the Madonna being attired as a gypsy girl (zingarella). The infant in her lap recalls the traditional iconography of the Madonna of Humility. In antiquity it was thought that the rabbit could reproduce without sexual intercourse, so here the rabbit is an allusion to the Madonna's virginity and the Immaculate Conception.

Auctioneer's Notes: Michael Tyzack was a British painter and printmaker and is considered an important representative of contemporary abstract painting. Michael Tyzack was born in Sheffield and studied at the Slade (1952-1956). Among his most important teachers were William Townsend, Victor Pasmore, Lucian Freud and Sir William Coldstream. Among his fellow students included, among others, Patrick Hern and William Scott. In 1956 he received a scholarship for a stay in Paris. After his return in 1957 he was active as a jazz musician in addition to his painting. Tyzack was a member of 56 Group Wales (1967-1972). Tyzack's painting Alesso 'B' won the first prize at the 1965 John Moores Painting Prizes in Liverpool. His work is characterised by its colour-happy Geometric abstraction. In 1968, he was a participant of the fourth 'documenta' in Kassel, with six geometric-abstract paintings. Since 1955 his work has been exhibited in over 50 group exhibitions in the UK and in France, Switzerland, Netherlands, Italy, Brazil, Australia, and Canada. Michael Tyzack was a teacher in the UK and North America and was a professor at the College of Charleston (1976-2007). He died, aged 73, in South Carolina.

Auctioneer's Note: Geraldine O'Brien was an Irish botanical illustrator, and daughter to Cicely Maud Carus-Wilson a distinguished artist. She was cousin to both the artist Dermod O'Brien PRHA and President of the Watercolour Society Kitty Wilmer O'Brien RHA. Her studio in Limerick was always called 'The Piggery' and was where she brought the plants from her garden in to arrange for her work. She continued to exhibit on a regular basis both with the RHA and private exhibitions around Ireland.

Auctioneer's Note: from the early 1980s Flynn was recognised first nationally and then globally as a ceramic modeller of the highest order. By 1990 he was in museum collections across Britain, Europe, Asia, and the Americas, from the V&A in London, and the National Museum of Wales, to the Museum of Arts and Design in New York and the Gyeonggi Ceramic Museum in South Korea. His idioms were the human figure and animals, alone and in groups, invariably in motion, walking, running, dancing, making love. Flynn’s ability to capture movement in living creatures was rare, and this on its own placed him at the forefront of the contemporary sculpture and ceramic scenes. Flynn was born in Wuppertal, Germany, one of three sons of Irish parents. When Michael was in his teens, the family left Germany, and Michael spent some time living on a farm in Ireland, then at 16 went to Birmingham School of Art to study fine art. He trained as a teacher at Worcester College of Education, then taught in schools for a few years. In 1975 he started studies in ceramics at Cardiff School of Art, and his work attracted attention even before he finished his degree. He subsequently took a master’s in Fine Art, and spent the rest of his life and career based in the city. He held teaching posts at Cardiff School of Art, Camberwell College of Art (now part of the University of the Arts, London), the Royal College of Art, Columbia University in New York and NSCAD University in Canada. Solo exhibitions included two at CAA in London (Ceramic Focus, 1999, and Forest, 2009), Michael Flynn at the V&A (2001-02) and Transition and Resonance (Llantarnam Grange Arts Centre, 2013, and Aberystwyth Art Centre, Wales, 2014).
