They were placed around a central rectangular jade box carved with the Daoist qian trigram, a symbol of the Qianlong Emperor, thus they appear to have represented celestial guardians protecting the Emperor in all directions.

JAPANESE PORTABLE BRUSH & INK CONTAINER, YATATE, Meiji Era, of curved form, carved in shallow relief with lotus leaves and stems, hinged compartment for ink, containing small bamboo brush,Auctioneer's Note: Originating from the Kamakura period (1185-1333), the yatate, translated literally as ‘quiver’, is a self-contained portable writing kit consisting of ink saturated cotton and an ink brush. The name comes from a time when samurai would carry writing implements at the bottom of their quiver, along with arrows. Early yatate were shaped like a hiogi (fan made from slats of cypress wood), though later a ladle shape with a hinged lid became popular, due to its ability to hold more ink.Provenance: private collection Vale of GlamorganComment: hinge with old copper repair, good patina.
