Auctioneer's Note: Born in Birmingham and later graduating from Goldsmiths, Wearing is a conceptual artist who first came to prominence with her series of photographs for The Face magazine, in which she asked members of the public to write whatever they wanted on a sign and then photographed them holding it. In 1997 she won the Turner Prize for ’60 minute silence’, her hour-long video of police officers standing nearly motionless, posing for a group photograph. In a similar style to Wearing’s self-portraits, ‘Olia (2003)’ is a photograph of model Olia Demidova, wearing a silicone mask of her own face and torso. Here Wearing plays with the boundary between reality and artifice, explaining “…it's to do with this thing that makes you look twice. I'm quite interested in that double-take."

Auctioneer's Note: Myatt is an artist and former forger who between 1986 and 1994 faked as many as 200 works of art by artists like Marc Chagall and Alberto Giacometti, managing to fool experts at Christie's, Sotheby's and the Tate Modern. He was convicted of taking part in what Scotland Yard called “the biggest art fraud of the 20th Century”. Since being released from prison he has returned to art, painting ‘Genuine Fakes’, where he emulates artists like Claude Monet and Vincent van Gogh.

Auctioneer's Note: Born in Leeds in 1938, Ackroyd attended the Leeds College of Art and then trained at the Royal College of Art where he studied under Julian Trevelyan. Primarily known for his etchings of landscapes, Ackroyd was made CBE in 2007 for services to engraving and printing. Ackroyd continued working into his 80’s, with his final work being completed a month prior to his death in September, aged 86.

Stan then changed to a woodpecker trademark instead.

Auctioneer's Note: Casimir Saint-Pierre made his debut at the Paris Salon of 1861 and continued to exhibit there regularly for the next fifty years, becoming a member in 1883. As well as portraits and mythological subjects, Casimir Saint-Pierre exhibited paintings informed by his multiple trips to North Africa. During his career, he was commissioned to decorate the foyer of the theatre in Nîmes, the choir of the Cathedral in Oran, and the ceiling of the Train Bleu restaurant in Paris.

Notes: The present bronze is of similar size to the 10½in. high wax model exhibited by Mêne at the Salon of 1850, entitled 'Kemkon - Handani Arab Mare and Foal' (number 31 in Mêne's catalogue). This poetic sculpture by Mêne captures a fleeting moment shared by an Arabian mare and her foal. The playful foal frolics under the watchful eye of its mother, an intimate glimpse into the equine world. Mares and foals were also a typical subject in painting, particularly those by George Stubbs and his followers. The casting is finely detailed and together with the playful and dynamic composition creates a realistic group of considerable charm. C.f. J. KÁROLY CSERNA (Hungarian, 1867-1944) oil on board - Cairo street scene, fully signed, 79 x 56cms
Auctioneer's Note: Cserna studied at the Hungarian Royal Drawing School as a student of János Greguss, Bertalan Székely and Károly Lotz. From 1889 he was an illustrator for the Hungarian newspaper Vasárnapi Újság. Cserna spent nearly two years from 1906 painting in Egypt, to great success, and was awarded the Order of the Medjidie by the Ottoman Sultan. He visited Munich in 1916, where he worked as a draftsman and war correspondent. After the war, he permanently settled in Budapest.

Auctioneers Notes: Heavily influenced by Hungarian folklore, Kádár became a distinctive voice in Modernist art, exhibiting at the celebrated Der Strum Gallery in Berlin in the 1920s, alongside Oscar Kokoschka, Paul Klee and fellow Jewish artist Marc Chagall. He would also be included as part of a pioneering show at the Brooklyn Museum in 1928, selected by Man Ray and Duchamp.

Auctioneer's Notes: The son of an Austrian shoemaker, Kauba studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in 1886. Inspired by the American West, many of Kauba’s sculptures portrayed cowboys and Native Americans; he is also well known for his Naughties , a series of mechanical sculptures, like ‘Metamorphosis’.

Auctioneer's Notes: Jaroslav Šetelík studied with E.K. Liška at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague with Prof. Ottenfeld 1903-1904. Following this, he travelled around Europe and with extened stays in France and Italy. The focus of his work is in landscape painting, realized both in a number of monumental canvases and in studies of forests and mountains, drawing inspiration from his numerous foreign sojourns. He is best known for his oil paintings depicting Prague in all its forms and moods.

Auctioneers Notes: Born into a military family, Kiselev was schooled in the Arakcheev Cadet Corps and the the 2nd Saint Petersburg Cadet Corps, before entering the Saint Petersburg State University. The school was temporarily closed during a period of student unrest in 1861, so he transferred to the Imperial Acedy of Arts where he was awarded the title of "Artist Third-Class". In 1865, he married and moved to Kharkiv, where he worked for the Kharkiv Land Bank. In 1875, he became a member of the "Association of Travelling Art Exhibitions". Two years later, he relocated to Moscow and taught at a grammar school for girls. For many years, he wandered throughout Russia and the Caucasus, making sketches for paintings that he would complete at his home in Moscow. In 1893, he was named a full member of the Academy and became a Professor in 1897. In 1906, in Vologda, he was one of the founders of the "Northern Circle of Fine Art Lovers", an organization which, among other things, helped young artists to get their work exhibited at the Academy. Later, as part of a team of artists, he helped to design the interior of the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sophia.
Joseph Daziaro were a publishing company specialising in photographs and lithographs, active 1827-1900.
