WILLIAM WESTON YOUNG (1776-1847) British Birds, An album of 41 fine original watercolour drawings of birds being working templates for Welsh porcelain decoration, each 16.3 x 25.7cms approx., tipped in and mounted in frame, many captioned in pencil on mount, lacking free-endpapers, nineteenth century calf, the upper cover blocked in gilt 'British Birds/By/William Weston Young/Neath. 1804', expertly rebacked by Bayntun of Bath, circa 1940, 4to Auctioneer's Note: a unique series of ornithological watercolours by William Weston Young who was born in Bristol on 20 April 1776 into a devout Quaker family, the third son of Edward Young, a Bristolian merchant and Sarah (Sally) Young (née Weston). William led a diverse and entrepreneurial life, but an early bankruptcy forced him into paid employment. On 23 January 1803, Young and his wife Elizabeth moved to new lodgings in Swansea, Glamorganshire. Here he gained employment under fellow Quaker, Lewis Weston Dillwyn, as a 'draftsman' at Dillwyn's Cambrian Pottery, where he remained until August 1806 on a salary of £75 per annum. The watercolours in the present lot would seem to date from this period. Dillwyn and Young, both in their mid-twenties, struck up a close friendship due to their common interest in natural history. Many of Young's painted wares feature accurately depicted flora and fauna as well as the taxonomic names of the illustrated species. Collections of this pottery can be seen at the V&A Museum, South Kensington, The National Museum of Wales, Cardiff and at the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, Swansea. In 1814, and now recovered from his debts, Young became the major investor in the Nantgarw Pottery established by William Billingsley and Samuel Walker. When the pair left the struggling business in 1820, Young assumed full control, and managed the debts through careful marketing and sale of remaining stock. Young's experience of firing ceramics, together with his familiarity with the region as a local surveyor and his amateur interests in geology enabled him to conceive of a heat-proof, blast-furnace brick, using silica found in large deposits at the head of the Neath Valley. His profit share from the Dinas Firebrick Works was ultimately a very modest pension, and William Weston Young died in relative poverty in Lower Mitton, Kidderminster on 5 March 1847. Provenance: William Yarrell; Charles J. Sawyer; J. Kyle Fletcher Ltd.; F.E. Andrews circa 1941, Cardiff; by descent to the Andrews family; private collection Cardiff, loosely inserted are three ALS and two carbon typed copies from the bookseller J. Kyrle Fletcher to the purchaser F. E. Andrews, relating the discovery of the album. The first, dated 13 February 1935 notes, 'Mr William Weston Young made the drawing for Mr Dillwyn's valuable work on British Confervae and a series of drawings of British Birds now in the possession of Mr Yarrell'. The correspondence relates that the bookseller traced the descendants of Yarrell and acquired the volume, which was sold to Andrews in 1941. In addition, an autograph note stating, 'A Collection of Water Colour Drawings of British Wild Birds found in the County of Glamorgan drawn by William Weston Young when living at the Mill in the Neath Valley, and sent by him in 1804 to Yarrell the Eminent Naturalist. It was on account of these drawings that Yarrell proposed WW Young as a member of the Zoological Society. When the Yarrell collection of black and White drawings of birds sold, this small collection of Water Colour Drawings in a different hand were part of the collection (sic) which was identified as the work of the Neath quaker artist: 41 Drawings in a modern full calf binding, gilt lettered.'. Morris made his debut on 19 January 1924 before a crowd of 35,000 spectators. He lined up in the Welsh front row against a powerful England pack that included future captain Wavell Wakefield. England dominated the first half and led 11–3 at the interval before securing a 17–9 victory, despite Wales responding with tries from Tommy Arthur William Johnson, Albert David Owen, and Tom Jones. His second cap was 2 February 1924, Scotland defeated Wales 35–10. The match was played at Inverleith in Edinburgh. Scotland dominated from the start, taking a commanding 22–0 lead at half-time. A VICTORIOUS 1972 LLANELLI RUGBY UNION JERSEY FAMOUSLY MATCH-WORN BY TOMMY DAVID VERSUS NEW ZEALAND On 31st October 1972, the Scarlets overturned the odds with an historic 9-3 over the New Zealanders. Back-row forward Tommy David had just joined the club from Pontypridd to play a crucial role in the bruising encounter at Stradey Park. To our knowledge another jersey from the famous match has never been auctioned. The traditional jersey bearing an Umbro maker's mark (International Sports Wear, Woodward Stadler of Gerard's Cross), size XOS, embroidered Llanelli Rugby Football Club shield to left breast, bearing the Prince of Wales feathers and yellow dragon, elasticated cuffs, three buttons to white collar, No. 6 felt patch to the rear, quilted stitched shoulder pad area. Auctioneer's Note: the match remains one of the most celebrated upsets in the history of rugby union. Played before a capacity crowd of approximately 26,000 people, the game saw a team of local Welsh players achieve the 9–3 victory over one of the most dominant international sides in the world. The win was so significant to the local community that it famously led to the town’s pubs running dry as fans celebrated long into the night. The scoring began early in the match and was set in motion by the creative play of Llanelli fly-half Phil Bennett. After Bennett struck the crossbar with a long-range penalty attempt, the ball rebounded into the path of the All Blacks scrum-half, Lin Colling. As Colling attempted to clear the ball, Llanelli centre Roy Bergiers charged down the kick and dived on the ball in the corner for the game's only try. Bennett’s successful conversion gave the home side an early six-point lead, stunning the visitors and electrifying the home crowd. New Zealand responded with a penalty kick from full-back Joe Karam, which narrowed the gap to 6–3, but they were unable to break through the resolute Llanelli defence to score a try. The match was characterized by intense physical play, with the Llanelli pack, including players like Tommy David wearing this famous jersey and his captain Delme Thomas, matching the All Blacks in the scrums and rucks. The victory was finally sealed ten minutes before the end of the game when winger Andy Hill kicked a massive penalty from near the halfway line, bringing the final score to 9–3. The cultural impact of the game was immediate and lasting. It inspired Max Boyce’s famous poem and song, which captured the sense of local pride and the disbelief that a club side could humble the mighty New Zealand team. For the players involved, many of whom were industrial workers from the surrounding area, the victory became the defining moment of their sporting lives and cemented Llanelli's formidable reputation in Welsh rugby. Tommy David was a powerhouse of Welsh rugby whose career was defined by physical resilience and a remarkable knack for being in the right place at the historic right time. Born in April 1948 in Pontypridd, he became one of the most recognisable forwards of the 1970s, known for his robust style of play and his ability to excel in both rugby union and rugby league. While he began his journey with his hometown club of Pontypridd, it was his move to Llanelli that would provide the backdrop for his most famous achievement on the rugby field. In 1972, under the innovative coaching of Carwyn James at Llanelli, David developed into a more versatile and mobile back-rower. This evolution was on full display during this match. David played an essential role as he refused to be intimidated by the New Zealanders, providing that physical edge necessary to protect the lead established early in the game. Remarkably, he repeated this feat just months later as part of the legendary Barbarians side that defeated the All Blacks in January 1973, making him one of the few players to beat the world's most famous rugby team twice in a single season. His international career for Wales was relatively brief, consisting of four caps between 1973 and 1976, largely due to the immense competition for back-row places during the golden era of Welsh rugby. Nevertheless, he was a member of the squad that secured the Grand Slam in 1976, a pinnacle for any Welsh player. His talent also earned him a place on the 1974 British Lions tour to South Africa.
