Auctioneer's Note: Mary Fedden (1915-2012) left school at sixteen to attend the Slade School of Art. She studied under the theatre designer Vladimir Polunin, who’d worked with the Ballets Russes. Fedden graduated in 1936, but her artistic career was put on hold by the outbreak of the Second World War. She volunteered as a Land Girl in Gloucestershire, later moving to London and working as a set painter for the Arts Theatre and as a mural artist producing propaganda for the Ministry of War. In 1944, Fedden was called up and sent abroad, working as a driver for the assistant head of the NAAFI in Europe. She returned to London two years later and resumed her artistic career, with her first solo exhibition at the Mansard Gallery at Heal’s in 1947.
Fedden married artist Julian Trevelyan, whom she had met at the Slade, in 1951. They collaborated on several projects, including a mural commission for Charing Cross Hospital. During her early career, Fedden also completed mural commissions for the Festival of Britain and for the P&O liner SS Canberra.
In 1956 Fedden became the first female tutor at the Royal College of Art, teaching painting to the likes of David Hockney and Allen Jones. Near Lucignano, a 1992 painting by Mary Fedden, is a quintessential example of her distinctive style. In this work, she employs a staged arrangement that merges a detailed still life in the foreground with a sweeping Italian landscape in the background, a technique that allows for a dialogue between the interior and exterior worlds. The foreground of the painting features a rich array of objects—ripe figs, a halved papaya, grapes, and a small fish—arranged on a dark surface alongside a striking black vase filled with flowers. These elements are rendered with simplified, bold shapes and a keen sense of pattern, reflecting Fedden's interest in the work of modern masters like Henri Matisse and Ben Nicholson. The objects appear as though they are set on a narrow ledge or windowsill, which acts as a transition point between the intimate setting of a room and the expansive hills of Tuscany visible beyond.
The landscape itself is characterized by its rolling golden hills, scattered cypress trees, and a distant hilltop village, all depicted with the same simplified forms as the still life. Fedden’s use of color is particularly effective here; the muted, earthy tones of the landscape contrast with the more vibrant, saturated colors of the fruit and flowers, drawing the viewer's eye across the entire composition. The flattened perspective creates a sense of spatial ambiguity, making the distant hills feel as accessible and tangible as the objects on the table.

Auctioneer's Note: Born in 1860 in Clerkenwell, London, Wain attended the West London School of Art, where he later became a teacher. In 1881 he sold his first drawing to the Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News , and soon afterwards left his teaching position to become a freelance artist. He became popular for his often whimsical drawings of cats. Despite his flourishing career, Wain frequently struggled for money, often selling his work and its copyright for small sums and receiving no royalties. Rent would often be settled with a hastily sketched drawing of a cat.
Wain’s mental health declined in his later years and by 1924 he was certified insane and committed to the paupers’ ward of Springfield Mental Hospital. Thanks to several successful campaigns to raise money for his care, he was later moved to better accommodations at Bethlem Royal Hospital and later Napsbury Hospital near St Albans, where he continued to draw and paint for the rest of his life.
